Crowns
A crown is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the appearance of a natural tooth. A crown can be a good solution if you want to change discoloured fillings to improve appearance.
The types of crowns we provide are:
- Porcelain bonded crowns – this is the type of crown that is normally placed on posterior teeth. It has a metal base, for added strength, which is covered in porcelain, this is matched to the colour of your teeth.
- Porcelain crowns – are made completely out of porcelain, they can be as strong as the bonded crowns, but have a natural look and are mostly used for anterior teeth.
- Full gold crowns
Post crown
If a tooth has been root filled it may be necessary to insert a post. The purpose of this post is to support the crown.
There are two types of posts:
- A prefabricated post which the dentist can fit directly into the root of the tooth or
- A custom made post which will be constructed by a laboratory to accurately fit the shape of the prepared tooth.
A treatment plan will be devised and discussed with you prior to your treatment commencing.
